Social Media and Mental Health

Social Media and Mental health

For my project, I focused on students at Animas High School with a variety of social media use and mental and physical health issues, as subjects for my interview. I conducted interviews with participating students, gathering quotes on their experiences with social media and its impact on mental and physical health. I used these quotes and parts from interviews as captions for their personal photos that I posted on my instagram page, smconfessionals.18. Using the hashtag #smconfessions, you can join in on the conversation and post your own stories and experiences with social media and health issues!

I think one reason I was super passionate about this project overall is because I am someone who uses social media a lot and will be using it even more going into communications. We constantly hear that social media affects our sleep, mental health, physical health, our lives overall, etc. but I have never looked into it too much. I think it was super interesting for me, as someone who uses social media constantly, to actually research its effects and be able to fully understand what about social media has these effects on users. It was also important for me to hear firsthand experiences from young adults in our Animas community on how social media has impacted them. It was surprising to me that most of the people I interviewed spent little to no time on social media and some didn't even have a social media account.
