Debunking Feminism and sexualityDebunking Feminism and Sexuality
An inclusive workshop put on by three seniors at Animas High School. Misson: To empower all people to redefine their misconceptions and perceptions around feminism, sexuality, and objectification. We will be ‘debunking’ the mainstream definition of feminism and sexuality and looking at aspects of these topics that may not have been originally considered. Vision: For people to understand the intersection between feminism, sexuality, and objectification and the ways in which these affect the interactions we have with our communities. There will be speakers, discussion and space for creative exploration and expression within the topics of feminism, sexuality and objectification. Speakers will speak about intersectionality, sexual education and grassroots activism in relation to feminism and sexuality. Date: Thursday, May 17th Time: 4:30-7pm Location: La Plata Youth Services garden |
The workshop was brought to fruition after I spent the last four months researching how the sexual objectification of women in Western cultures perpetuates a cycle of sexual violence towards women. In my research I came across a lot of feminist theory and beliefs as well as insight into how society views sexuality. It was frustrating to see that the sexual objectification of women was largely seen as a feminist issue when in reality it affects us all in one way or another. In collaboration with two other students who studied different aspects of feminism, we decided to put on a workshop that would help to get rid of and critically analyze some of the negative misconceptions people have around feminism and sexuality in today's world.
