Using Disney and StorytellingFor my senior project, I wrote a book using techniques I learned from studying Disney and its use of narrative and storytelling. I wrote my thesis analyzing two Disney animated movies, and spoke in my TED Talk about the evolution of Disney's use of things like formulas, characters, visuals, and plot lines. I then used everything I'd learned from this to write my own novella using formulas that Disney bases many movies off of, such as the Hero's Journey monomyth and the elements of a Shakespearean comedy.

I chose this project because, as a writer, I have to respect anyone who can claim such an empire of success for nearly a hundred years, as Disney has done. Similar to most American children, I have a large sense of nostalgia for Disney, and upon rewatching many of these movies I find that they are full of insight into what sells and how I might be able to improve my own creative works. There's a lot to analyze, using critical lenses and pointing out the problems and flaws in them, but also looking at why they are so successful. My original goal with this novella was to avoid the pitfalls that Disney often falls into, such as caricatures and stereotypes shown in harmful ways, and to see how effectively I can use the strategies that Disney uses when writing out a movie.
