HOneybeesFor her project, Grace focused on why honeybee populations are decreasing and how to prevent further losses. She inquired local beekeepers to discover the primary threat to bees in the Durango area, varroa mites. She then designed different hives that protect the colony from varroa in a way that is undisruptive to the bees, has easy access to honey, uses only naturally occurring chemicals, and is aesthetically pleasing.

Commercial beekeepers are treating varroa mite infested hives with seasonal chemicals that contaminate the honey within the hive. Even with these chemical treatments, the varroa are still seen within hives, and can destroy entire colonies. My mission is to learn about natural treatments of varroa, and how colony defenses implemented in the hive design can prevent varroa infestations.
