Name of projectFor my senior project, I created a workshop proposal to present to the board of the Durango 9R school district. This workshop would be held in hopes to open dialogue between ELL families and 9R faculty. This event would take place before the 2018-19 school year and will be discussion based, with a focus on improvement of ELL programs. This event is open to the public, and public participation is highly encouraged in an effort to show our support for our ELL community!

I chose to do my project on ELL programs because of the time I spent abroad last year. I came back fascinated by not only culture but foreign language and the way that it is currently taught. I started my journey of Senior Project at the Durango Adult Education Center, and that is when I truly realized the need for ELL programs that is present in Durango, no matter how "white" our town may seem. Because of how little I knew about the diversity of Durango, I set out to find just how we are serving the diverse population of our community. Come to find out, the answer was that we are not as successful as we may have hoped. Many of our minority groups in district 9R are struggling to meet school standards. Between my fascination for foreign language and bilingualism and the desire to advocate for the inclusion of ever aspect of our community, I began to look into Dual Language ELL programs. Come to find out that these programs take years and years to develop and are only truly successful in large cities.
About halfway through Senior Project, I came to the realization that the best way to advocate for the ELL community, is to give them the space and time to let them advocate for themselves! That's when my workshop and workshop proposal was born! |
